Foundational Skills Taught In A Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum

From its German origin, the word “kindergarten” literally means “children’s garden.” This translation is the perfect analogy for the goal of a kindergarten homeschool curriculum. As homeschooling parents, we want kindergarten to be the rich soil in which we plant the seeds for our children to grow in intellect and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Through the subjects of Bible, language arts, math, science, and social studies, a kindergarten homeschool curriculum provides the foundational skills and resources necessary for our children to succeed academically and in life.

A quality Christian education, therefore, begins with a curriculum taught from a biblical worldview. As homeschoolers, we are blessed with the great opportunity to teach lessons solely devoted to the Bible and Christian living. In teaching a kindergarten Bible class, children are taught that God is the Creator of all things, they each have their own gifts, and they are significant and loved by God. In addition, kindergartners also learn that Jesus came to save them from their sins, so they can have a relationship with God and share Christ’s love with others. However, even when they fail and sin after accepting God’s free gift of eternal life, a kindergarten homeschool curriculum also teaches children that God continues to listen to their prayers.

Another very important subject for kindergarten students is language arts. A kindergarten language arts classroom uses a variety of strategies to help children learn new words and develop foundational writing skills. In addition, kindergartners grow intellectually as parents read books to their children. When using books and texts that are musical, rhythmical, and inspirational, children quickly learn to read more fluently themselves. In fact, if children recite as few as eight nursery rhymes by the age of four, they have been proven to be excellent readers. Thus, a quality kindergarten homeschool curriculum continues to introduce children to poetic reading.

One aspect of a kindergarten classroom that is often overlooked in lesson plans is oral language. One way oral language is taught in kindergarten is by creating a weekly list of conversation topics f

or a parent and child. For example, if the topic is a favorite toy, both the homeschool parent and child should each take 30-45 seconds to talk about their favorite toy. After they both have talked, each then repeats what the other person has said. In doing this, children learn that listening is just as important as speaking in a conversation.

Math is a fundamental subject in a kindergarten homeschool curriculum that doesn’t require expensive supplies. Kindergartners are introduced to basic terms, such as more than, less than, or equal to. As the basic numerical knowledge of children is increased, they are able to count to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s. Children also learn the basic elements of geometry by recognizing circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles. In addition, children learn life math skills that deal with time, money, and measurement. Kindergartners are able to identify different values of coins and learn to measure distances with a ruler and also with informal objects, such as a piece of string, their hands, or their feet.

A great advantage of teaching kindergarten is the excitement of children to learn. Therefore, a good kindergarten science curriculum supports and encourages this curiosity. Children are reminded that God is the Creator as they explore His world through their five senses: tasting, smelling, hearing, touching, and seeing. They also learn responsibility by caring for plants or a pet. As kindergartners are taught to care for their own health, they learn the importance of physical activities and eating healthy.

Finally, children also begin learning about social studies. In kindergarten, most of the curriculum is oriented toward family and relationships, which provides a foundation for later studies in history and geography. Children in kindergarten know their basic contact information like their phone number and street address, and they learn how to read and create a basic map, such as the route they take to get to Grandma’s house. They also learn about national historical figures like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Whether we are teaching our children about the Bible, language arts, math, science, or social studies, an effective kindergarten homeschool curriculum provides a solid foundation for further academic success. Most importantly, however, it nourishes the insatiable desires of young children to grow in knowledge and instills in them the aspirations to be life-long learners in God’s world.

Waldorf Education On Beautiful Vancouver Island

Subtitle: Waldorf Language Immersion in a Culturally Rich Environment

For students wishing an English language immersion experience, Island Oak Waldorf School on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia, Canada, offers a unique opportunity. Island Oak, one hour north of the historic capital city of Victoria, is located in the resplendent Cowichan Valley. The word Cowichan, derived from the Quw’utsun First Nations word “Khowutzun,” means “warm lands” or “land warmed by the sun” in recognition of the area’s mild climate. The valley is a peaceful, culturally rich community in which exchange and boarding students can further their Waldorf education, immersed in the English language.

Axel (last name), a boarding student, and Yakob (last name), an exchange student, are both attending Island Oak from Germany during one-half of the 2008/2009 school year. Both students have found the experience to be valuable. “It is a great opportunity to improve one’s skills in the English language,” says Yakob. “Everyone helps you learn English and they don’t make a big deal around it.” Axel adds that he found his classmates happy to help when asked. “If they know you want them to help you, then everyone helps,” he says. Both found the Island Oak students to be welcoming and friendly.

The two students also lauded the faculty for making learning enjoyable. “You learn, but the lessons are fun,” says Axel. “You can enter into the class more.” They note that the small class sizes at Island Oak make the educational experience a more personal one, giving each student the opportunity to receive individual attention. This intimacy provides space to work out problems and offers opportunities for the students and faculty to make decisions together. “There is a respect for the students’ ability to make decisions about life,” says Yakob, appreciatively.

Another consideration for foreign study is the opportunity to try out a different environment to help one make a decision about where to attend university. Axel is a self-described “city man” but wanted to try a change from city life and has enjoyed seeing deer and raccoon up close. “The nature is amazing,” he says. The Island enjoys an abundance of wildlife, including black bea

rs, Roosevelt elk, bald eagles and, in the surrounding oceans, killer whales (orca), sea lions, sea otters and porpoises. Interestingly, there are no skunks, grizzly bears or poisonous snakes on Vancouver Island.

Both young men praised the trips they’ve taken with Island Oak, including ocean kayaking and a skip trip. “It was a new experience to be able to go skiing with your school,” Yakob said. Vancouver Island offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor activities, including ocean kayaking, river rafting, hiking, camping, fishing, snorkeling, diving, caving, storm watching on the rugged west coast of the Island, and snow activities in the nearby mountains.

Both Axel and Yakob have found the host family experience to be well organized and would recommend that students select host families who live in or near town to make getting around easier. They also suggested that German students come in the 10th grade given the timeframe of German exams. Despite this advice, the two 11th graders agreed that although they will have a lot of preparation for their exams when they return to Germany, they would come again during 11th grade in a heartbeat.

Waldorf education is now it its 28th year in the Cowichan Valley, surrounded by a strong anthroposophical community, including a Camp Hill, Christian Community, anthroposopical based naturopaths and nurses, a Steiner-based biography counselor, and more. The nearby Sunrise Waldorf School provides preschool and K-8 Waldorf education, with many Sunrise students continuing their high school education at Island Oak.

Island Oak has developed strong exchange and boarding programs. In the exchange program, a student from Germany lives with a current Island Oak student’s family for half of a school year. During the other half, the Island Oak student attends school in Germany and lives with the exchange student’s host family. In the boarding program, the student from Germany lives with a host family from the Waldorf community. There is a charge for boarding, whereas in the exchange program, each family agrees to reciprocally provide for the living expenses of the hosted student.

Local students enjoy the regular opportunity to have foreign students enter the high school for a semester, which helps create a seamless experience for the foreign student. As Axel and Yakob pointed out, the local students are happy to offer language assistance to the extent desired by the visiting student. The entire community appreciates the richness brought by German and other foreign students and welcomes exchange and boarding students with open hearts and open homes.

Write A Superb Analytical Essay!

Here, I will reveal the secrets to writing an extremely powerful essay or evaluative article. These skills and structures will come in useful if you are going to be an author writing evaluations or analyses, or a student who writes academic essays, or perhaps a journalist who writes columns and articles. Even if you already possess all the tactics, tips and strategies for crafting an excellently structured and analytical essay, you might still want to refresh your skills and reconfirm what you possess.

It is commonly known that there are three parts to every analytical essay: the introduction of the essay, the body of the essay and the conclusion.

The introduction has to have these elements: the question of the essay, the answer to the essay question, the preview or survey of the essay and some restrictions or some parameters. What is the question of the essay? This is named the “Knowledge Based Problem”, or simply a question that you want an answer for. What is the answer to your question? This is technically labelled your “thesis”. Sometimes called merely an answer, your “thesis” is your answer that sums up the entire case of the essay in one simple strong sentence that is comprehensive and clear. What am I going to talk about in the course of my analysis? Here is where you promote and suggest what you want to write about in the course of your analysis. What are the definitions and parameters of the terms? There are two important key parts here. One: “definitions” meaning that you define the terms and phrases such that you can write your essay properly and fluidly. Two: “parameters” meaning the areas and subjects that you are not going to talk about in the course of the essay or the restrictions of your essay.

The body of the essay comes about next in the course of good writing techniques and, here, many people actually don’t know how to do this properly. They don’t know how to write a good essay body. Here, they write instead whatever comes to their mind. This is incorrect and only leads to muddleheaded thinking, poor concentration, and unclear ideas in important sentences.

Instead, what you need is a topic sentence to kick the paragraphs off. A topic sentence is a sentence that sums up your paragraph and makes a key argument. You need a topic sentence because this is what yo

u promised to write in your introduction. Explain what you mean by the topic sentence and give details and information. Sometimes you need to define words as well. In addition, give an example or examples. Tell the reader what the example means or what the examples mean. Summarise your argument after doing that. Do remember to answer the question using your topic sentence once again at the very end of the paragraph. You do this systematic approach for each paragraph to get a clear essay.

There are a few major things you need and should do at the conclusion of your excellent essay and nothing more, if you want a structured essay. Summarise what you have just said. Conclude with your restated thesis. Now you can get a bit creative. End with something catchy or end with some unexpected twist, or even with some unique, aphoristic, cunning maxim or quotation. This will bring your essay to a great close. However, note that essay writing theory can only bring you so far. Sometimes there is more to writing an essay than this structure. Sometimes you can violate some of the rules of good writing, and that is when you are excellent and well-versed in the skills and tactics of writing. There is an X-factor in addition to everything that I have discussed.

As one historian said: “If the Romans could not have been defeated and the Germanic tribes had accepted the Roman culture and language like the Gauls (today’s France) did, the largest percentage of today’s Europe would likely consist of Latin languages. Germanic-based German would be as extinct as the Celtic language of Gaul. The Germans of today would probably speak a language similar to French.

If Britain had not been conquered by the Germanic Anglians and Saxons, today’s world language English would never have come into existence. Instead they would still speak a variety of Latin, or again Celtic. Maybe North America would have been conquered and settled by the British nevertheless, but then still today’s U.S. citizens would speak modern Latin or maybe even Celtic. The same would have occurred to many peoples in Africa and India, who were subdued by the English and assumed their language.

If the Romans had succeeded to integrate the Germanic people, maybe the continuing Roman rule would have merged the European peoples into a permanent nation of Roman citizens. Possibly, Europe then might even have remained politically united in a single state.

Maybe even the history of North and South America would have run a different course. A large European empire, with domestic trade from the Atlantic to the Euphrates river in the Middle East, would likely have had less interest in colonizing remote areas than the two national states that were rivaling with their neighbors, Spain and England.

However, perhaps it was especially the fragmentation of Europe into many rivaling states that spurred European peoples to their greatest achievements, by fanning, striving and competing with each other. These often led to bloody wars, but more often to fast technological progress, business-friendly politics and wealt

h, military might, explorations and conquests, and glorious achievements of culture and art – whereby the leading nations of each period were not held back by the slower ones or by a torpid central government.”

By destroying the ailing Roman Empire, the Germanic tribes ultimately made possible for the peoples of the western world a much brighter development and greatness, which contributed, spirally to the development of the entire world.

Schutzhund: Training And Evaluating The German Shepherd

As you go through life, you are bound to see German Shepherds working in a number of careers. Some are guard dogs, some are therapy dogs, and some work in law enforcement. German Shepherds are immeasurably popular in the working field because their extreme intelligence makes them highly trainable, and their strength and agility makes them capable of performing most tasks. In Germany, standards for German Shepherd breeding and performance are much stricter. A training program called “Schutzhund” was created in the 20th century as a means by which to train and regulate the performance of the breed.
The Schutzhund training and judging process is threefold. There are three separate levels a German Shepherd must complete to become certified in Schutzhund. In the first level, known cleverly as Schutzhund One, the dog in question has to determine eligibility by undergoing a temperament test called a “B Test”. Most handlers will go through basic obedience and socialization training with their German Shepherd prior to attempting the B Test, as it gauges the dog’s ability to obey their owner and interact with distractions such as people or other animals. If a particular dog ever shows signs of fear or fear-based aggression, he or she will be disqualified from the Schutzhund process immediately. Thus, it is important for those pursuing Schutzhund certification to provide proper etiquette training for the dogs from puppyhood, lest the be disqualified and forbidden to breed, compete, or be registered in Germany.
Besides the temperament test, each level of Schutzhund focus on three major areas: obedience, tracking ability, and willingness to act as a protector. As the levels progress from one to three, the German Shepherd must complete more difficult versions of each task and will be judged with more scrutiny.
Obedience training and testing is performed in an open field. Dogs are usually worked in teams of two, though each dog will take turns performing. Obedience testing in Schutzhund is rather similar to obedience testing in the American Kennel Club, with more stringent regulations. The dogs are judged on their ability to perform a battery of obedience commands, specifically heeling and staying commands, and are tested for patient and whether or not they are gunshy.

utzhund is also similar to tracking competitions and trials found in the Unite States, only more specific. Schutzhund candidates will follow a lengthy track locating specifically and strategically placed items along the track. Once the item has been found, the dog is taught to lay on his stomach and hold the item between his forepaws, thus showing or telling his handler than the object in question has been recovered. Judging in Schutzhund tracking is based on how quickly and efficiently the German
Shepherd is capable of tracking, locating, and reporting the various items on the track.
The third and final phase of Schutzhund training and testing is based around protection. The handler will have an assistant, typically in a padded safety suit, create a mock attack on the handler. The German Shepherd is evaluated based on his willingness to protect his handler/owner, and his response to commands such as attack and release, and the efficiency and obedience with which these commands are performed.
Schutzhund training and testing, while containing many similar elements to American dog trials, training, and competition, is a much more stringent and specific method of canine evaluation. In Germany. Schutzhund testing is so respected that no dog can be bred unless it is certified in Schutzhund.

German Memory – Dresden Bombing & The World’s Reaction

Overall, Anglo-American bombing of German cities claimed between 305,000 and 600,000 civilian lives. But the devastation in Dresden made a great impact on neutral countries at that time. Howard Cowan, an Associated Press war correspondent, subsequently filed a story saying that the Allies had resorted to terror bombing.

There were follow-up newspaper editorials on the issue and a long-time opponent of strategic bombing, Richard Stokes MP, asked questions in the House of Commons. The destruction of the city provoked unease in informed circles in Britain.

The bombing of Dresden was the first time Allied populations questioned the military actions used to defeat the Nazis.

The nature of the bombing of Dresden has made it a unique point of contention and debate. Critics of the attack come from across the political spectrum, from far left to far right.

Gunter Grass, the German novelist and Nobel laureate for literature and Simon Jenkins, the former editor of “The Times” referred to the Dresden bombing as a “war crime”.

Harald Jaehner, a German literary critic stated: “Look at the bombing of Dresden, which was really an assault on the civilian population.”

Dr. Gregory H. Stanton, president of Genocide Watch, wrote: “The Nazi Holocaust was among the most evil genocides in history. But the Allies’ firebombing of Dresden and nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were also war crimesŅŅ.”.

Before the bombing, Dresden was regarded as a beautiful city and a cultural centre, and was sometimes known as Elbflorenz, or Florence on the Elbe. Its notable architecture included the Zwinger Palace, the Dresden State Opera House, and the Dresden Frauenkirche, its historic cathedral.

According to Friedrich: German forces were in full retreat by February 1945, and the impact on civilians was out of all proportion to the military goal. He argued that the bombing was a war crime even under the legal standards of that time, because the Allies intended to cause as many civilian casualties as possible.

Friedrich also contends that the outcome of previous bombing attacks well demonstrated that the Allied forces were aware of the destruction caused by incendiary bombs, an

d that due to the collapse of German air defense and improvements in bombing accuracy, future attacks were likely to cause ever increasing numbers of civilian deaths.

But the United States military made the case that bombing of Dresden did not constitute a war crime, based on various reasons that the raids had legitimate military ends according to the military circumstances at that time.

The US also argued the military units and anti-aircraft defenses were sufficiently close to the city and it’s not valid to consider the city was “undefended”.

The US also pointed out the raid achieved the military objective, without “excessive” loss of civilian life.

The US legitimacy of the military ends were based on the rail-yards which were subjected to American precision bombing as they assumed the rail-yards had beyond their ordinary value as a transportation center.

An inquiry conducted at the behest of the US Secretary of War, General George C. Marshall also concluded that the raid was justified by the available intelligence. The inquiry also justified the military operation by eliminating German ability to reinforce a counter-attack against Marshall Konev’s extended line and to regroup using Dresden as a base of operations. As Dresden had been largely untouched during the war, it was one of the few remaining functional rail and communications centers.

A secondary objective was to disrupt the industrial use of Dresden for munitions manufacture, which American intelligence believed to be the case. The city contained the Zeiss-Ikon optical factory and the Siemens glass factory, both of which, according to the Allies, were entirely devoted to manufacturing military gun-sights.

They believed immediate suburbs contained factories building radar and electronics components, and fuses for anti-aircraft shells and other factories produced gas masks, engines for Junkers aircraft and cockpit parts for Messerschmitt fighters.

Because of the concentration of undamaged industry, unusual in Germany at the time of the raids, the allied planners very strongly believed that Dresden had strategic importance to supply material for the defense of German military.

After the firebombing they estimated that over 25% of industrial capacity was disabled or destroyed, eliminating potential use of Dresden by the German military to launch counter-strikes against the Soviet advance.

Cell Phone Tower: Just How Far Is Safe?

Do you live within a quarter mile of a cell phone tower? If you do, your health may be at risk, according to two separate studies from Germany and Israel..

German study: 3 times greater risk of cancer

Doctors living in the Southern German city of Naila conducted a study to learn whether a population living close to two transmitter antennas installed in 1993 and 1997 had increased risk of developing cancer.

Nearly 1,000 patients participated in the research, all of whom resided at the same address during the entire observation period of 10 years. With negligible differences in social, etchnic, environment, and age factors, what they found is quite revealing: the proportion of newly developed cancer cases was three times higher among those whose homes were located at a distance of up to 400m (about 1300 feet) from the cellular transmitter site, compared to those living further away. These same patients also fell ill on average 8 years earlier relatively.

Computer simulation and measurements used in the study both showed that radiation in the affected area (within 1300 feet) is 100 times higher compared to the outer area, mainly due to additional emissions coming from the secondary lobes of the transmitter.

The first 5 years of data didn’t reveal any significant increased risk However, for the next five years (period 1999 to 2004), the odds ratio for getting cancer was 3.38 higher in the affected area compared to those outside. Breast cancer topped the list, but cancers of the prostate, pancreas, bowel, skin melanoma, lung and blood cancer were all increased

Israel study: fourfold cancer risk

Another study from Israel’s Tel Aviv University examined 622 people living near a cell-phone transmitter station for 3-7 years. The test subjects were patients in one clinic in Netanya and compared them against 1,222 control patients from a nearby clinic. Participants were very closely matched in environment, workplace and occupational characteristics. The people in the first group lived within a half circle of 350m (1148 feet) radius from the transmitter, which came into service in July 1996.

The results were startling. Out of the 622 patients who lived close to the transmitter, 8 cases of different kinds

of cancer were diagnosed in a period of just one year (July 1997 to June 1998): 3 cases of breast cancer, one of ovarian cancer, lung cancer, Hodgkin’s disease (cancer of the lymphatic system), osteoid osteoma (bone tumour) and kidney cancer. This compares with 2 per 1 222 in the matched controls of the nearby clinic. The relative risk of cancer was 4.15 higher for those living near the cell-phone transmitter compared with the entire population of Israel.

Women were found to be more susceptible. As seven out of eight cancer cases were women, the relative cancer rates for females were 10.5 for those living near the transmitter station and 0.6 for the controls relative to the whole town of Netanya. One year after the close of the study, 8 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the affected area compared to two in the control area.

How to Locate the Cell Phone Towers and Antennas Near You

Obviously, studies like those above can be quite disconcerting. Visit antennasearch.com and you’d be surprised at the number of cell phone transmitters and antennas planted virtually in your backyard. This site will show their exact locations and distances from your home or place of work. It also pinpoints future tower locations, helpful information for those considering buying a home.

What’s the difference between a tower and an antenna? Towers are tall structures where antennas are installed. A typical tower may easily hold over 10 antennas for various companies. Antennas, on the other hand, are the actual emitters of signals for various radio services including cellular, paging and others. Antennas are placed on high towers or can be installed by themselves (stand alone) on top of buildings and other structures.

As an example, I’ve located 3 cell phone towers and 22 antennas within a quarter mile from where I live, with the closest one at 845 feet.. And this is in a relatively quiet residential neighborhood by the ocean in the small city of Hilo in Hawaii. As you may guess, I did my research only well after we’ve moved in. Fortunately, we’re here on just a lease and we’ll be a bit wiser next time we look for a new home.

What to Do If You Live Near a Cell Phone Transmitter

Short of relocating, there are some things you can do to counter the effects of electromagnetic radiation (EMR). The Safe Wireless Initiative of the Science and Public Policy Institute in Washington, DC, outlines three levels of intervention in accordance with the public health paradigm that everyone can apply. Here are our suggestions based on these guidelines:

The primary means of intervention is through avoidance or minimizing actual exposure. This simply means avoiding contact with EMR as much as possible. In case of a cell phone tower close to your home, this could mean using specially formulated RF shield paint, shielding fabric, shielding glass or film for windows, etc. Although they may sound extreme, these measures are a life-saver for someone who suffers from electrosensitivity, a condition in which a person experiences physical symptoms aggravated by exposure to electromagnetic fields.

The secondary means of intervention is to minimize the effects of exposure. This includes the use of devices that help dissipate the chaotic energies on the biofield caused by EMR. A biofield is the matrix of weak electromagnetic signals that the body’s cells use to communicate with each other. EMR disrupts these signals, causing the cells to harden and trap toxins and waste products inside–including free radicals known to result in cellular dysfunction and interference with DNA repair. A scientifically validated bioenergetic device, which usually comes in the form of a pendant, chip or plug-in device, helps strengthen the biofield and maintain proper communications between the cells.

The third means of intervention is to help reverse any damage that’s already done. This includes nutritional support such as anti-oxidant supplementation to help

counter the effects of free radicals. Supplementing with anti-oxidants SOD, catalase, glutathione, and Coq10 are especially recommended. Microwave radiation has been shown to decrease levels of these anti-oxidants that the body normally produces to protect itself. These levels are sensitive indicators in stress, aging, infections and various other disease states.

By taking as much preventive measures as you can from the primary, secondary and tertiary means of intervention, you are providng yourself and your family multiple layers of protection from this modern environmental stressor.

German Memories- Franco-prussian War And Otto Von Bismarck’s Diplomacy

Prussia’s victory over Austria increased tensions with France. The French Emperor, Napoleon III, feared that a powerful Prussia would upset the balance of power in Europe.

Bismarck, at the same time, sought war with France; he believed that if the German states perceived France as the aggressor, they would unite behind the King of Prussia.

A suitable premise for war arose in 1870, when the German Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen was offered the Spanish throne, which had been vacant since a revolution in 1868. The French not only blocked the candidacy, but also demanded assurances that no member of the House of Hohenzollern become King of Spain.

Bismarck then published the Ems Dispatch, a carefully edited version of a conversation between King Wilhelm and the French ambassador to Prussia. The publication was intended to provoke France into declaring war on Prussia. The Ems Dispatch had the desired effect. France mobilized and declared war, but was seen as the aggressor; as a result, German states, swept up by nationalism and patriotic zeal, rallied to Prussia’s side and provided troops.

The Franco-Prussian War in 1870 was a great success for Prussia. The German army, commanded by Moltke, won victory after victory. The French were defeated in every battle. The remainder of the war featured very careful German operations and massive confusion on the part of the French.

At the end, France was forced to pay a large indemnity and surrender Alsace and part of Lorraine. Though Bismarck opposed the annexation, arguing it would be the “Achilles’ Heel” of the new empire, Moltke and his generals insisted that it was needed to keep France in a defensive position. He broke France’s supremacy over continental Europe after the Franco-Prussian war.

He carefully built the external security of the new German Nation upon his skillful diplomacy, which isolated France internationally and created a vast and complex system of alliances for mutual military support with most of Europe’s nations.

In the role of an ‘honest broker’, Bismarck was also successful in maintaining peace and stability in Europe by settling French political conflicts through negotiation

s. Essentially a cautious politician, Bismarck never pursued an imperialistic course in Europe. In Africa however, Bismarck followed for some time a policy of imperial conquest, in a manner similar to the other European powers.

His most important tool in politics was his talent in the successful planning of complex international developments.

Bismarck decided to act immediately to secure the unification of Germany after his victory over France. He opened negotiations with representatives of southern German states, offering special concessions if they would agree to unification. The negotiations were successful; King Wilhelm was crowned “German Emperor” on 18 January 1871 in the Hall of Mirrors in the Chateau de Versailles for the further humiliation of France.

German Memoirs – Latin American-germans & Their Early Migration To Brazil

Birget, a student on city planning was telling her experiences in Cuba. Her experiences in the Caribbean Island were quiet strange. While she was narrating some of her observations, my discussion with walker came to mind.

Walker had a marvelous experience in Belize and other Latin American countries with German descendant Latin Americans.

There are German descendant minorities in almost every South American and Central American countries including Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

In the eighteenth century some isolated and small groups of German immigrants came to Latin America mainly from Germany, but also from Switzerland, Austria and Russia. Though the US was the main destination for immigration in the 19th century, the immigration to Latin America also was significant for various other political and economic reasons. Ninety percent of them came to Latin America mainly for Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile.

When the first group of Germans arrived in 1824 to Sao Leopoldo, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul in the southern Brazil, after 4 months of traveling, there were 39 people, being 33 Lutherans and 6 Catholics. They found a country with a climate, vegetation and culture very different from those of Germany. Southern Brazil was a land of gauchos, the cattle herders who used, and still live, in the Pampas region of Southern Cone.

In the next decades, however, waves of Germanic immigrants arrived to many areas of the Southern Brazil. They mostly settled in rural areas called colonies. These colonies had been created by the Brazilian government, and the lands were distributed between the immigrants. They had to construct their own houses and cultivate the land.

Germans came to Brazil to work as farmers because there were many lands and job opportunities. The Brazilian government had promised large lands to attract the immigrants, where they could settle with their families and colonize the region. In fact, these lands were in the middle of big forests and the first Germans had been abandoned by the Brazilian Government. The first years were not easy. Many Germ

ans died of tropical diseases, others left the colony to find a better life elsewhere.

In fact, the German colony of Sao Leopoldo was a disaster. Nevertheless, in the next years another wave of 8, 000 Germans arrived to Sao Leopoldo, and then the colony started to develop, and the immigrants established the town of Novo Hamburgo (New Hamburg). From Sao Leopoldo and Novo Hamburgo the German immigrants spread into other areas of Rio Grande do Sul, mainly close to spring of rivers. All the region of Vale dos Sinos has been populated by Germans.

During the 1830’s and part of 1840’s German immigration was interrupted due to the “War of the Farrapos” in Brazil. The immigration restarted after 1845 with the creation of new colonies. The most important ones were Blumenau in 1850 and Joinville in 1851, both in Santa Catarina state and attracted thousands of German immigrants to the region. Some of the mass influx was due to Revolutions of 1848 in the German states.

In the last third of the nineteenth century immigration to Brazil became so difficult with the “Heydtschen Reskript” (1859) and they started to migrate towards Argentina. In the 1880’s and 1890’s German immigration to Latin America once again increased with the thirty percenatage of the total emigration from Germany towards Latin America.

Until the end of the 19th century 122 German colonies were created in Rio Grande do Sul, and many others in Santa Catarina, Parana, Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. Germans had established the first middle-class population of Brazil, in a country divided between slaves and their masters. Germans immigrants in Brazil were the fourth largest immigrant community to settle in the country, after Portuguese, Italians and Spaniards.
