Learn To Speak German Quickly – It’s As Easy As Going For A Swim

Going to study or work in a German-speaking country? Before you go you need to make sure that you implement the Dip and Dive. It will minimize culture shock and maximize your ability to learn German fluently during your time Europe.

Wham! Bam! Just like that I wanted to learn German quickly and easily, and I needed to find a way. I had a 2-step strategy to do so. It’s called the Dip and Dive. The Dip step was to sign up for a beginner German class at the Goethe Institute in my area. The Dive step was to study German for 2 months at a Goethe Institute in Germany. If you are going to live in a German-speaking country you need the Dip and Dive strategy to ensure success in becoming proficient in German.

The Dip – When going for a swim, most of us first dip our toes in the water to check the temperature in order to get our psyche ready to dive in. This Dip is based on a similar principle. It refers to getting your psyche and brain ready before you leave, by learning about the German language and culture, through a language class or an online course. To get the most out of the Dip, you should find a good online German course that allows you to be fully immersed in the German language.

One of the principal benefits to learn how to speak German online is that it is convenient, and enables you to learn German anywhere and anytime. Once you have acquired solid intermediate German language skills and you have a sufficient knowledge of the country’s culture, this will lessen the culture shock and better prepare you to learn, study, or work abroad in any German-speaking country.

The Dive – When we dive into the water we are completely submerged and there is nothing we can do but enjoy the water and the moment. Likewise, when you are living and studying in Germany, you will get the most enjoyment and fulfillment if, and only if, you try to immerse yourself in all things German as much as you can. By learning through immersion, you will have an opportunity to maximize your acquisition of German. To get the most out of the Dive you need to do the following:

· Your Residence – Keep in mind that living away from home is expensive, thus, you should try to find accommodations that are within your budget. If possible, try to find a German home that offers accommodations to foreign students through the language school or various agencies or services online that specialize in this. You want to be cut off, as much as possible, from anyone who speaks English because the temptation to speak English will override your willingness to speak German, and your German will either stagnate or get worse. The bottom line is that you want to put yourself in the best possible area to live with and interact with German-speaking natives.

· Your Social Life – You need to seize the opportunities to make German friends to improve your ability to learn German fluently. Living with German-speaking natives can provide you with constant interaction to learn German quickly and is a great way to network and establish meaningful relationships. You will also have plenty of opportunities to speak German and learn German vocabulary during your day-to-day activities. By observing, you will learn by example the cultural norms and etiquette. By listening, you will improve both your comprehension and your pronunciation and ability to utilize the colloquialisms.

· Your Attitude – Having a positive attitude can make or break your Dive. You are abroad to not only learn German but to experience the culture and people as well. So despite your neurosis or shyness or various excuses, you have to keep your spirits up. Be brave and don’t worry about making mistakes, it is part of the process when learning a language, more so while living in Europe. Remember, the Dip and Dive if done properly, as mentioned, will make the transition much smoother and less of a shock to the system to acclimatize to and enjoy the learning experiences, while in Germany.

You Can Learn German Fast

It’s very easy for an English speaker to say stupid things in German if you try to learn the language from a book! Before you take that trip to Germany or any other German speaking country in Europe, you’ll want to have practiced your German conversational skills with a trusted source before you do. Read my tips and tricks below and discover how you can learn to speak German fast in no time.

It’s really not as difficult as you might think. Part of learning any language is cultivating a good ear. A very good starting point in your German learning adventure would be to listen to authentic German conversations. You will discover that many German sounds, sound totally different from their English rival. “Th” in German is pronounced like an English “T.” The letter “G” is never soft, either. Features like this make German sound harsh and hard to the English ear but the more you listen and identify them, the easier it will be for you to learn German fast, because you’re internalizing the sound of the language.

Now, rent a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, or any actor or actress with a pronounced German accent. Practice speaking some of the actor’s lines, mimicking the accent as closely as possible. You’re still speaking English but you’re using your newly-trained ear to teach yourself what German feels like on the tongue. This familiarity with the feel of German will help you learn German fast, much faster than you would if the language felt completely strange to you.

Of course, neither of those steps really teaches you German. For that you need some kind of course. Many people nowadays enjoy online learning, because they can study at their own pace and repeat lessons until they’ve mastered them. Other people would prefer audio or software based language courses or by taking an evening class at their local College. Whichever way you choose to study, however, make sure your coursework emphasizes oral conversation. Learning German is a dynamic activity, and you can’t learn to speak the language from a book because the book can’t speak back. You will learn German fast only if you speak it and hear it spoken.

Here’s a very important tip as you study German: remember that all German nouns have genders they are either masculine, feminine, or neuter. This isn’t something we have to worry about in English, so gendered nouns may be new to you. Mas

culine nouns include dog (der Hund) and coat (der Mantel). Feminine nouns include blanket (die Decke) and vacation (die Ferien). Neuter nouns include house (das Haus) and pig (das Schwein). As you can see, the article “the” can be translated as either “der,” “die,” or “das” depending upon the gender of the noun it accompanies. There’s no way to predict whether a noun is going to be masculine, feminine, or neuter, so if you want to learn German fast, always remember to learn the proper article at the same time you learn the noun.

Here is my final and most important tip how to learn the German language fast: I recommend you make a German friend so that you can practice having a German conversation whenever you have the opportunity to do so! Dialogues on tapes or CDs are great, but to really get the feel of a language, you need to speak it just as you would your own. For that you need a partner. You’ll not only learn German fast that way, but you’ll improve your social life at the same time!

Looks Good On A Resume
The world is getting smaller and smaller as we get more connected. Not only are we competing for jobs against fellow citizens of our own country but more and more against friends of other countries.

To put down a second language on your resume is a plus in most industries and a must in others. Extensive studies have been done that prove that those who are bilingual get paid more on average and can transfer jobs and positions quicker than their monolingual counterparts.

Any second language will do, but learning to speak German should be at the top of the list because it is most widely spoken language in Europe.

Makes You Smarter
Speaking a second language is just plain awesome!
Those who can speak two or more languages have higher IQ’s, are more creative, have greater mental flexibility, and are better at solving complex problems than monolinguals. They are smarter, period. If you don’t believe me, search “benefits of being bilingual” on the internet and see for yourself. And then get started on learning that second language!

Connects You to More People
Bilinguals feel a connection to more people. Even when in the beginning stages of learning a language, the connection is there because it will come up in conversations and you’ll find out that a lot of people either already know two languages or have the desire to learn to speak another one as well.

The World Is Small?
Simply put, bilinguals are more connected, smarter, and get paid more. Join the bilingual club, if you haven’t already. Once you learn a second language, you will realize “it’s a small world after all!”

German is not a language of the past. Over 80,000 new titles a year are printed in German. Each year, more books are published in German than in any other language except English and Chinese. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of these German books are translated into other languages. Learn to speak German to gain access to these books.

The most popular books both current and old have been, or most likely will be, translated into your native language. But there is something about reading the original text in its original language. Although great care is taken to translate correctly and therefore the words arecorrect, sometimes a little of the emotional feeling is lost in translation. In my opinion, it is always best to go straight to the source.

GERMAN SPEAKING COUNTRIES HAVE RICH CULTURES

Philosophy and Music
Germany is often referred to as “the land of poets and thinkers” (das land der dichter und denker). And I believe we could expand that statement to include the surrounding German-speaking countries as well. The culture in that area is rich, full of a lot of ideals that have helped shape society worldwide.

German, Austrian, and Swiss German authors have been awarded 10 Nobel prizes for literature over the years. Think of all of the classical music that has come from German composers: Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Strauss, and Wagner. Psychologists Freud and Jung come from German speaking countries. Dozens of Nobel prizes in physics, chemistry, and medicine have been awarded to scientists from the three major German-speaking countries. Kant, Leibniz, Marx, and Nietzsche each played an important role in the history of philosophy.

Think of all the German castles and other beautiful architecture that hails from German-speaking countries. Learning to speak German could give you better insight into how these people thought and innovated.

Food
German cuisine varies from region to region but they all seem to concentrate on meats, especially sausages, a variety of dessert cakes, rye bread, and, of course, beer. These foods appear in plenty, especially around the time of Oktoberfest.

Sports
Football (soccer) is by far the most popular sport in Germany. Germany hosted the World Cup in 2006 and they placed third, which is very respectable. The next two most popular sports in Germany would be marksmanship and tennis. Germany has produced many top notch players in these sports: Michael Ballack, Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Oliver Kahn, Boris Becker, and Stefi Graf. Also, Germany is always a strong contender in both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
